Sehnsucht: a German noun that represents the feelings about the facets of life that are unfinished and imperfect, paired with an intense longing for more ideal outcomes.

Jennilee Marigomen's exhibition explores the space between everyday phenomena and ephemerality. With a keen eye for capturing fleeting moments and the beauty found in everyday life, Marigomen's work delves into the realm of human intervention and reflection in the natural world. In this exhibition, Marigomen's photographs provide a unique perspective on the ever-changing landscape, often overlooked in our busy lives. Through her lens, we witness the delicate dance between stillness and time, allowing us to reflect on the transience and changing nature of our surroundings. Using light, reflections, and saturated colours, Marigomen uses images to evoke a sense of quiet introspection, inviting viewers to pause and contemplate the world around them.

Amidst the future of forest fires and environmental challenges, Marigomen's work strives to be optimistic. However, as the title Sehnsucht suggests, her work straddles between optimism and melancholy. She contemplates that life is imperfect, with a hope for a better future for the next generation. Her work is a search for happiness while coming to terms with the fact that some of these desires may be unattainable. Through Jennilee Marigomen's lens, we are reminded of the intricate connection between humanity and the natural world, encouraging us to consider our role in preserving the beauty and tranquillity that exists amid change.

Beauty in the Ordinary

"There is a certain zen that comes with Jennilee Marigomen. Her works are familiar but ethereal. Her eyes have evolved to see the beauty in the mundane around her, allowing her to get lost in her own senses. She reveals the iridescent nature of our everyday.

Some photographers travel to faraway places or put themselves in extreme situations to get up close with the extraordinary. Not Jennilee Marigomen. Her passion lies in investigating everyday phenomena in search of beauty in our ordinary surroundings.

“My work is about evoking a visceral feeling. I think that a lot of my photos capture a familiar, yet specific truth that is common to everyone. Something that you can look back to and feel at that moment in time, everywhere and everyday.”

But with a focus on the “ordinary”, how does one go about finding the inspiration that comes through so significantly in the final photo? Jennilee says she finds motivation in the ability to exercise awareness through her senses: “Getting lost in experiencing and reveling in my environment is as fulfilling to me as the finished product.”
